Charles Van Horn was hired as the women’s golf head coach on July 20, 2021. The 2022-23 season will mark his second year at the helm for the Wolves.
In his first season as head coach, Van Horn coached the Wolves to a first-place finish at the Pfeiffer Invitational, three top-five finishes, and an eleventh place finish at the 2022 South Atlantic Conference tournament. During the 2021-22 campaign Ida Hansen turned in a medalist performance at the Coastal Georgia Invite while Sofia Liden registered two top-15 finishes on the year.
Prior to his time at Newberry, Van Horn was the head women’s and men’s golf coach at Georgia Military College since 2017. During his time at GMC he developed the first women’s golf team in school history in 2018. In 2019, Van Horn coached the men’s golf team to a win in the NJCAA Division III National Championship and finished the year ranked ninth nationally by Golfstat.
Van Horn came to GMC after a stint as head men’s golf coach at Judson University in Elgin, Illinois. Prior to Judson, Van Horn was the assistant coach at Waubonsee Community College for seven years. During that time, Waubonsee competed in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Championship and clinched a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament.
Before his tenure at Waubonsee, Van Horn spent 11 years as the head coach at Aurora Central Catholic High School where he coached the team to eight sectional tournaments.
In 2011, Van Horn retired from the Aurora Illinois Fire Department where he served as Senior Medic for over 20 years. During his time with the fire department, Charles earned the title of Level III Firefighter, Hazmat Incident Commander and Master Scuba Diver.
Van Horn has two bachelor degrees. He earned a bachelor’s in Engineering from Southern Illinois University in 1983 and then received a bachelor’s of science in business management from Benedictine University in 2008. He also has completed associate’s degrees from Morrison Institute of Technology in 1981 and Waubonsee Community College in 2010.
He is married to his wife, Glenda, and they have three daughters Amber, Leah, and Alison.
